Michael Alvin Barnett was born on November 28, 1945 in New York, NY. He attended the Lawrenceville School before entering Yale in 1963, where he was a member of Jonathan Edwards College, sang in the Glee Club, and majored in marine biology.

After graduating in 1967, he went on to receive his doctorate from the Scripps Oceanographic Institute and later lived in Washington, DC, where he worked as an ecologist for Henningson, Durham, and Richardson, an architectural, engineering, and consulting firm. 

He died on December 21, 1988 at the age of 43.
